Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary is a mainland island located in Picton, New Zealand.

Our goal is to enrich the community through restoration of our beautiful coastal bush, and to ensure the natural ecosystems and native flora and fauna flourish in a predator-free environment. We are involving school groups, community groups and people of all ages in this wonderful community effort.

The sanctuary is 40 hectares protected by a 600 metre long predator proof fence, and a programme of intensive trapping. Volunteers have accomplished all the work on the sanctuary - the tracks, the jetty, and the plantings. Kaipupu Sanctuary will become a significant showpiece of nature restoration right on Picton’s doorstep.

There could be more sanctuaries like this, on peninsulas, with good fences. Perhaps Northland itself, or the Coromandel, may in time become such sanctuaries.
