Whatatutu, Gisborne
Mangapārae Papakāinga Restoration: Reforesting our whenua and improving our wetland; our initiative includes intensive planting, water testing, pest control, fencing, creating protected access, and raranga wānanga using material sourced from the papakāinga. All our progress is documented on our dedicated webpage https://www.mangaparae.com/planting-progress.html We hope that our whanau-led initiative will establish the blueprint that will include succession planning for future generations. Our next 5-year focus is to plant an additional 15000 trees, build protective pathways, and increase pest control, and our dream is to construct a small restoration building for our workshops/wānanga. Our trees are sponsored however we need specialised equipment, an off-road vehicle to transport trees and volunteers, protective pathway materials & construction, education and awareness wānanga ongoing costs for pest control, water testing and, ongoing planting along rivers, and threatened species support.
Mangapārae Papakāinga Ecological Restoration: A whānau-led wetland and riparian restoration project based in Whātātūtū, Tairāwhiti Gisborne. Planting over 13,000 native trees. In addition, building and a way-finding loop with protective boardwalks.
