Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust

Our mission is to remove forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari and restore to the forest a healthy diversity

Waikato

Providing a safe environment for flora and fauna to live and grow in. We have 4 enclosures which have a variety of rejuvenating flora, the undergrowth is growing hugely without the disturbance of mammalian pests. We have a unique education programme which allows students to experience a pest-free environment.

We have reintroduced kiwi, takahe, kaka, hihi, robins, whiteheads. The takahe are breeding well, 5 chicks in 3 breeding seasons. The kiwi are breeding well with 12 new arrivals in 2011-12 season, we have sightings of unbanded juvenile robins and kaka. The flora is thriving and there are many tracks available for public to access the mountain.
