Warmth, Safety, and Hope: Night Shelter Napier Ahuriri

A centrally located overnight shelter for Napier’s homeless opened on 1 July 2025 . Āhuru Mōwai, “a warm, calm haven,” provides short-term refuge for some of the city’s most vulnerable men—known as whānau pounamu—as winter deepens.

The result of determined collaboration between local iwi, community leaders, churches, council and social services, the Napier Ahuriri Homeless Shelter Society was formed following the tragic deaths of three people sleeping rough last winter—losses that highlighted the urgent need for action.

Āhuru Mōwai represents not just shelter, but dignity, safety, and the first steps toward a better life. We are incredibly grateful for the community support that has brought this vision to life.

Named by the Kāhui Kaumātua of Te Taiwhenua o Te Whanganui ā Orotū, the shelter draws its name and kaupapa from te ao Māori values of care and collective responsibility.

With neighbourhood concerns front of mind, the Society has taken strong steps to ensure the shelter operates safely and respectfully. There is a strict admission process, no alcohol or drugs allowed on-site, and no visitors permitted during shelter hours. The police have been consulted throughout.

The Society is seeking community support, from donations of warm clothing to volunteering or financial contributions. While at first the shelter will serve men only, work is underway to explore future support for women and youth experiencing homelessness.
