In the North West corner of the South Island a 'ghost has been awakened' - and so too has New Zealand's longest continuous single track.....
West Coast
Led and powered by massive volunteer efforts (>29,500 hours to date), the 85km Old Ghost Road would not have been possible without the generous in-kind and monetary support from hundreds and hundreds of outdoor-lovers who have donated time and money.
We took on the challenge of creating The Old Ghost Road as a not-for-profit community group, now we’re intent on rising to the challenge of sustaining it. As such, we are hugely reliant on your generous donations and ‘sustainability contributions’ to help us achieve this. Our pledge in turn is that we will continue to pour passion, commitment and hard work into this, but there are nevertheless limits to the results such inputs can achieve. If you haven't already contributed, or, having now visited and seen the trail in a new light, we'd really appreciate any support you can extend.
The Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust (MLBT) was established to create and operate The Old Ghost Road. Our aim is to assist in diversifying the region’s offering to visitors, celebrate its natural heritage, create economic opportunity, and ultimately reposition the West Coast as one of New Zealand’s must-visit regions for backcountry adventuring. Not only are we creating a recreational asset of significance, we are giving threatened wildlife throughout the area a helping hand via on-the-ground predator control efforts.
