    Paparoa School Planting Day

We chickened out of the day originally set down for this, before the school holidays because, a couple of days out the weather looked like it was going to be rubbish. In fact it was fine. Leading into the back-up date, the 27th July, the forecast was just as bad, but we decided to go ahead anyway. As it turned out, the weather could not have been much better, and the digging conditions were remarkably good considering how much rain we’ve been having.

This event had been kicked off with 500 trees courtesy of the NRC’s Enviroschools programme. It took the combined team of NRC people, parents, grandparents, school staff and of course the enthusiastic pupils themselves not much more than an hour to get all those trees planted, followed by a yummy morning tea. And then, inevitably it rained in the afternoon.

    Other Planting Activity

Since the last Update the Reconnecting Northland-funded planting gang have completed their 10,000 tree assignment on seven different properties in our area, Fonterra staff from the Maungaturoto site planted up a small gully at Ash and Karen Cullen’s place (just in time to beat the rain), and the Otamatea High School’s Primary Industry class came out to plant about 400 trees at a Marohemo property. Their hosts Robert and Ann were happy to show them around their chilli-growing operation. Of course someone had to try eating a whole chilli raw. The results were predictable, but at least this was after the planting had been completed! You can see some photos of these activities on our Facebook page – see the link below.

Third Community Planting Day coming up - 16th August

Next month we’ll be heading out to Batley to help our hosts Rex and Rae Roadley to add to the plantings they have carried out in previous years. We had a couple of very successful days out there last year, and it’s bound to be a great day again this time round. We’ll be joined by some folk from the Spark Foundation too. It will be interesting to see how many people can make it to a week-day working bee. Rex and Rae are great hosts, happy to share the history of the farm and the homestead with you, along with some memorable home cooking! Of course, there will be the chance to meet one of our regular Nursery volunteers, Rex’s mum Zoe – one of the more active 90-year-olds I know.

More details about this event closer the time.

In the meantime, you might like to read this article which Rae wrote for the Northern Advocate about the Reconnecting Northland planting gang coming to their lease block last month: http://www.raeroadley.co.nz/2017/07/11/rooting-for-the-kaipara-harbour/

    If a picture’s worth a thousand words…

    *First Community Planting Day confirmed*

Mark Saturday 10th of June down in your diaries for a planting day at the White Rock Hills property, Marohemo – your hosts Bryce & Aneta, Peter & Prue. This follows on from the success of last season’s planting, and demonstrates their commitment to an ongoing restoration programme. When you’ve met the people, you’ve viewed the land and their animals then you understand why they did so well in the Balance Farm Environment Awards this year.

Those of you who have been involved with us in previous years will know we have been honoured by the presence and support of Te Radar, not to mention a certain part-time local, P Henry. This year our freshly minted Mayor, Greg Gent has committed to making the time in his very busy schedule to come along and help out on this planting day. So if you can come along to the planting day you will also have the chance not just to meet our Mayor, but also to work alongside him. How good is that?

Te Radar sends his best wishes, by the way.

    *Our Givealittle page now live*

We now have a Givealittle page. With the patience and persistence of the good people at Givealittle we now have a convenient way for people to support our cause financially. It will be a space for people to check out what we are up to without going onto Facebook. Check it out at https://givealittle.co.nz/org/otamateaharbourcare

    *If a picture’s worth a thousand words…*

What would a moving picture be worth? I have a cunning plan to enhance our Givealittle page with a brief video. Have a look at the Project Island Song page for an example of the sort of thing I am hoping to get produced. See: https://givealittle.co.nz/org/projectislandsong . Anyone got ideas of ways and means of achieving this?

    *Nursery working bee*

I now have a separate email list for notifying nursery working bees, but the timing is right to add this here as well. We will be having a session this Thursday morning starting at about 8.30am. [since passed] The main thing will just be weeding. By then Robin Dickens should have been with his grader to level out the metalling on the track, which should make it a whole lot better for access over the winter months. It will be a lot easier to load plants out too.

    *The stars in our midst*

Its been a long time since the last Update, but its not as though we have been completely idle, as you will find out as you read below. The big news I want to share with you is the recent success at the Ballance Farm Environment Awards achieved by one of our planting partners, White Rock Hills Ltd (aka Bryce & Aneta Lupton and Peter & Prue Vincent). Congratulations to them for winning the Beef + Lamb New Zealand Livestock Award and Ballance Agri-Nutrients Soil Management Awards, a great effort and well deserved. And of course congratulations again to Bryce and Aneta on their even more recent nuptials. It puts a smile on my dial.

    *Nursery plants looking good*

Over recent times I have been posting photos of nursery working bee activities, on our Facebook page (see samples in gallery). If you haven’t had a look, I encourage you to do so, and to “like” our page if you haven’t already done so. While there have been a few challenges with some species, there have also been some outstanding successes, including the move to use the services of Nga Rakau Nurseries to propagate our seed for us. Its looking great for the start of planting some time in May.

    *More planting sites needed*

We have not yet finalised our planting list for the season, so if you are interested in getting some done, or know someone who might be a candidate, please do get in touch. You might be interested to know that with the NRC’s $1.2M Environment Fund for 2016-17, $380,000 was spent in the catchment of the Kaipara Harbour, a not inconsiderable amount. I learnt this at the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group’s quarterly hui this week.

Most of the Fund is spent on assisting farmers with the cost of fencing, and what we do can complement this so that desirable plants grow in the fenced off areas rather than the plethora of weeds which Northland is so good at growing. It is also a plus for biodiversity too of course.

    *Seed collecting time*

I have just started collecting seed for next year’s crop, something I really enjoy doing. I have been keeping an eye on a mahoe site just alongside the Paparoa-Oakleigh Rd near the intersection with Wairere Valley Rd, and had intended to check it out on my way through to Whangarei a couple of weeks back. I drove through just a few minutes after the mowing contractor had been through, so not so much seed to collect from that site now. You win some, you lose some I guess.

    *Website developer needed*

You will probably be aware that Otamatea Harbourcare does not have a website. There could be advantages in having one to boost our profile and gather more support for our cause. The drawbacks are the cost of developing something worth having, and the resource required in keeping it up to date. If you have ideas on how this could be done, please let me know. I think we should be able to get a grant to cover establishment costs, but having someone available to maintain it is key to this being a success. I welcome your ideas.
