Orokonui ecosanctuary provides safe habitat for many species of New Zealand's endangered birds, reptiles and plants.
Otago
Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a 307 hectare forest between two craggy mountains, Mopanui and Mihiwaka, 20km north of Dunedin. The beautiful forest ecosystem is being restored to its pre-human state with habitat enhancement and reintroduction of locally extinct species.
An extensive education programme reaches all levels of students from throughout the South Island, providing inspiration and skills to protect biodiversity for the future.
A small staff of professionals and over 13,000 volunteer hours each year ensure that the project meets its targets and maintains the viability of the sanctuary.
Giveallittle funds are sought for the supplementary food needed for kaka and takahe conservation.
Help raise funds to provide safe habitat for kiwi and takahe.
Orokonui Ecosanctuary is a wonderful community project near Dunedin restoring 307 hectares of forest ecosystem to as close as possible to its pre-human state. A 9km predator fence protects many species of native plants and animals many of which are threatened with extinction. Re-introduced species include Haast Tokoeka kiwi, takahe, robin, kaka, tuatara, Otago skinks and green skinks.
As well as the biodiversityprotection work, conservation education is a significant part of our role.
A large group of dedicated volunteers works alongside a small team of professional staff to create this valuable asset for future generations.
