Pixies Animal Rescue Trust

Pixies Animal Rescue Trust

Pixies is a sanctuary. Our aim is to provide a safe haven for all animals. We strive to rescue the abused, abandoned and neglected.

Nationwide

We are a small organisation that rescues all animals in distress. We care for them, nurse them back to health and put them up for adoption. We also deliver food to homes that have dogs on chains and are unable to feed them. We build shelters when by law we are unable to take the dog from the owner. We drive hundreds of kilometres to pick up, support and educate.

And right now we urgently need your help please!

We have really struggled over the last year as our regular source of income from doggie day-care has been hit-hard by lockdowns and lack of travel. Luckily donors kept us afloat.

Without the support of Kiwis who love animals as much as we do, we won’t be able to continue to help the animals we have or take on any more emergency cases. If you can, please donate whatever is possible. We are grateful for any and all support.

October update - recovering from crime  13 October 2021

Since our last update Pixies suffered a horrible crime. Some-body broke in to the shelter and killed several defence-less bunnies and ducks. Pictured is the sole surviving duck of a whole family. A poor little guy with a big friendly personality. This vile offence has set off a series of changes as we put out a call to take animals off our hands since we could not be much assured of safety on the premises, until the culprit is apprehended. The SPCA generously offered its help to transport many residents to other shelters who opened their doors. They are thankfully in safe locations. We can not update on how they are doing as they are no longer ours.

At the last update several moons ago, we were admittedly very stretched, with impacts of covid seeing us caring for 109 cats and 35 dogs - many of which were not well. Due to the movement of many animals (as above), along with limited intakes since the crime incident we currently care for 24 cats onsite, while five of our dogs and other animals are out in foster care. Residents at the date of writing would also include a pig, goat, duck, peacock, peahen, and some lovely bunnies.

Depending on what amount of space is free, given that the seasonal animal board business supports the charitable shelter endeavour, we can now take a maximum of forty cats and thirty dogs. The needs out there far exceed this, and we can count ourselves fortunate to also have 23 wonderful Fosters we can call upon if there is an overflow. When the overflow facility isn’t enough we do our best to direct or connect those seeking aid to other rescues who may be able to assist.

Pixies would like to note here that being a no kill shelter is no longer a core mission statement. Mid-year this policy needed to change, and it was changed under consultation with vets and a leading animal welfare organisation. It is sad when any life is ended, but all animals are vet checked and vet advice is followed as regards this issue We aim to save lives. and to find other solutions where-ever feasible.
