Pōneke Ngeru Rescue Trust

Every week, Pōneke Ngeru Rescue takes in cats and kittens with stories that would break your heart, some born wild, some abandoned, some simply forgotten.

Recently, a tiny kitten came into care severely underweight, crawling with lice, and exhausted from trying to survive on her own in Tawa. After a warm bath, treatment, and a full meal, she finally relaxed in her foster carer’s hands and drifted off to sleep, safe for the first time in a long while.

We’re also deep in the middle of helping a large stray colony in Berhampore, where sick, starving, and unneutered cats have been breeding for years. Many arrive frightened and unwell, needing extensive vet care before they can ever know the comfort of a home. It’s slow, emotional work, but every cat trapped, treated, desexed, and placed in a foster home is another life changed.

Cats like these come through our doors far too often, and each one needs food, litter, medication, desexing, and a safe foster home. We’re committed to giving every cat a fair chance, no matter where they come from, but we rely completely on the kindness of our community to keep going.

As of December 2025, Pōneke Ngeru has been operating for five years and a registered charity for seven months. We now have 45 foster carers and 82 cats and kittens in care.
