    This month we received the disappointing news that our High Court appeal, held in June, had been dismissed by the Judge. The appeal related to the zoning of the area behind New Chum/Wainuiototo and how far the 'High Natural Character' line should extend.     Although this has been a blow for us, all is not lost...

    There are still some residual issues to be resolved by the interested parties (the owners/developers, TCDC, Whangapoua Community Association, The NZ Coastal Trust and us). A key issue is the number and positions of house sites and their visibility from the beach.

    📣 Funds needed...

    In order to present expert evidence on how many houses and where these will be, we will need to employ a landscape architect, planner and legal team.

    Did you catch Phil Keoghan (host of The Amazing Race) speaking on RNZ today about how special New Chum/Wainuiototo is? Phil has visited hundreds of countries around the world and knows how special the beach is.

  • Last chance to stop houses at New Chum/Wainuiototo!!!

    We are back in the High Court, 10 June 2025

    In February this year, we lost our appeal in the Environment Court. After careful consideration and on the advice of our barrister, Rob Enright, we have decided to challenge this ruling. We are not going to give up the fight!

    Why are we appealing?

    This is likely to be our last chance to stop a housing development at New Chum/Wainuiototo.

    We are now the only group appealing the decision. We understand we have a strong legal case. For more details on the technical aspects of our appeal, see https://www.preservenewchum.org.nz/june-appeal.

    What will funds go towards?

    To continue our legal battle, we need $50,000 for expenses. The ELA (Environmental Legal Assistance) fund we previously relied on has been abolished and so we are relying on donations. Any unused funds will be put towards ongoing legal costs.

    Happy holidays..... Stay safe and protect the fragile beauty of New Chum for Everyone.💖

    Please remember per TCDC there are... 'No dogs or fires or overnight camping at New Chum.'

    There are lots of Dotterel chicks down the far end of the Beach so please give them a wide berth.

    We are expecting an environment court decision mid January 2025 re development, and as a consequence of ELA funding being 'mothballed' Preserve New Chum will require further funding for our continuing legal fight to Preserve New Chum from Development.

  • The journey continues for the Preservation of New Chum Beach.

    Preserve New Chum for Everyone would like to give everyone an update on our progress to date.

    The Northern Headland of New Chum Beach has been secured and we are now in the structure plan process as dictated by the interim decision of the Environment Court in relation to housing development on the larger block of land directly behind New Chum Beach.

    Significant legal expenses are necessary to engage the necessary experts to represent Preserve New Chum for Everyone Inc and all those who have supported this cause for over a decade to preserve and protect this iconic area.
