We believe that New Chum (Wainuiototo) is special, a ‘taonga’ (treasure), which should remain undeveloped & pristine for future generations.
Nationwide
We are the voice of the past, the present and the future, dedicated to the preservation of New Chum (Wainuiototo) for ever.
Our journey will continue for as long as New Chum (Wainuiototo) is still under threat of development. The catchment behind the beach is privately owned and over the years, there have been several attempts to subdivide.
Development would bring with it houses, people, pets, and recreational vehicles which would destroy the values - isolation, remoteness, pristine vistas and endangered wildlife, that make New Chum (Wainuiototo) unique.
The significant heritage value associated with this land further entrenches the importance of this iconic location, untouched for generations. It also hosts significant forests and native wildlife colonies which add to its outstanding and important coastal value.
As New Chum (Wainuiototo) is recognised as one of the top 3 Wilderness Beaches in the World, this iconic area requires a concerted effort by us all that its protection for future generations is secured.

We lost our High Court appeal BUT we are working on other angles 12 October 2025
This month we received the disappointing news that our High Court appeal, held in June, had been dismissed by the Judge. The appeal related to the zoning of the area behind New Chum/Wainuiototo and how far the 'High Natural Character' line should extend. For more details, see our website https://www.preservenewchum.org.nz/highcourtloss
Although this has been a blow for us, all is not lost...
There are still some residual issues to be resolved by the interested parties (the owners/developers, TCDC, Whangapoua Community Association, The NZ Coastal Trust and us). A key issue is the number and positions of house sites and their visibility from the beach.
📣 Funds needed...
In order to present expert evidence on how many houses and where these will be, we will need to employ a landscape architect, planner and legal team.
We continue to work on your behalf to preserve New Chum/Wainuiototo as a wilderness beach. We thank you for your ongoing support.
Thank you for your ongoing support, Sal.
Thanks so much for your donation. Sadly, the court hearing didn't go our way, but we are battling on.

Hi there, thanks so much for this donation. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful in court, but the work continues.
A terrific donation, thank you so much. Regrettably, things didn't go our way in court, but we have a few battle cards left to play.
