Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately balanced oceanic ecosystems, Sea Shepherd New Zealand works to ensure their survival for future generations.

We have been protecting and defending whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary for over ten years and saved the lives of over 6000 of these magnificent creatures!

In 2014 we launched Operation Icefish (2014-2015) a huge success which raised the issue of illegal, unregulated, unreported (IUU) fishing of Antarctic and Patagonian toothfish to International attention. This has led the way for unprecedented levels of cooperation in the fight against illegal fishing in the waters of Antarctica.

In 2017 we launched our first campaign in New Zealand "Operation Pahu" to protect and defend our endemic NZ dolphin. Read more about it here:

In 2018 we received Charity Status and donations are now eligible for a tax credit! Please support us to help protect the world's oceans and wildlife.

Operation Pahu - Hector's Dolphin Defence Campaign - Sea Shepherd New Zealand  18 June 2018

Posted by: Sea Shepherd New Zealand

Operation Pahu is Sea Shepherd's first campaign in New Zealand. It will be a long term determined effort to reduce the risk to Hector’s from illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) commercial and recreational fishing from Te Waewae Bay up to the Canterbury Bight.

Whilst at sea, we will also monitor Hector’s subpopulation numbers, collecting field data and contributing to the existing photo identification catalogue, held at the University of Otago.

Through a combination of science, community engagement and civilian monitoring of fishing activity, 'Operation Pahu' will make a stand for these precious dolphins before it is too late for them.
