What is Slow Food Waitakere all about?
Slow Food brings together the joy (of food) with the courage to address the unfairness in our food system.
Slow Food works around the world to protect food biodiversity, build links between producers and consumers, and raise awareness of some of the most pressing topics affecting our food system.
These initiatives range from community activities organized by local convivia, to larger projects, campaigns and events coordinated by Slow Food's national offices and international headquarters.
Slow Food Waitakere brings together people who care about food – to celebrate and enjoy good food and wine, to promote food and taste education, and to support protecting the environment, defending food biodiversity and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Here are some of the ways we are going to do this in 2015
• Fundraise to support food related projects both locally and globally including Oxfam, our School Garden project in Africa, and our Auckland School Garden project
• Support community initiatives including the Glen Eden Food Hui,
• Hold food related social and educational events – March Italian Soirée (hosting our Slow Food Umbria visitor), the Big Boil up cooking class, Young Parents Cooking classes.
• Celebrate and support biodiversity and the Ark of Taste with the Oratia Apple Recipe Competition – with a great prize.
• And there is more to come.
Promotes taste education and sustainability.

Supports local growers and food artisans.
Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us.
Since its beginnings, Slow Food has grown into a global movement involving millions of people, in over 150 countries, working to ensure everyone has access to good, clean and fair food.
Slow Food believes food is tied to many other aspects of life, including culture, politics, agriculture and the environment. Through our food choices we can collectively influence how food is cultivated, produced and distributed, and as a result bring about great change.
