The Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society assists Auckland Council in maintaining the pest-free status and in re-introducing native species for the wildlife sanctuary at the Shakespear Regional Park.
So far we have we raised funds to bring back whiteheads, robins and little spotted kiwi and this year we plan to bring back saddlebacks. This is a very noisy and friendly bird which will be a popular sight on forest walks. Next up will (probably) be the wetapunga (giant weta).
Translocations are surprisingly expensive and typically cost $25,000 each for each species. Please help us restore a part of Auckland to its natural state.
Our involvement with the Open Sanctuary includes: restoration and development of ecosystems; conservation and enhancement of its natural, historic and cultural features and values; providing financial, material and physical support; advocacy.
