Te Ora Hou is a Maori and Christian kaupapa organisation supporting community development in Whanganui.
Manawatu / Whanganui
Te Ora Hou is a kaupapa Maori, faith based team serving in our Whanganui community with the purpose to work with rangatahi, whānau and communities to promote:
whanaungatanga (identity andbelonging),
pukengatanga (competence and mastery),
mana motuhake (responsibility and independence) and
ohaoha (contribution and generosity.)
The plan for the Te Ora Hou Whare is to purpose-build a complete facility to enable Te Ora Hou
services to be housed and to run activities for young people and community.
Te Ora Hou requires a facility from which all workers can be housed and multiple small community activities can be run concurrently
Te Ora Hou has long outgrown our 2 bedroom cottage and double garage. We have overflowed to the managers home next door. The location is perfect - in Stone Soup
neighbourhood, within 450m of 3 schools.
The new facility has been designed with the needs of Stone Soup community led development in mind. With a community activity room, open plan dining, kitchen and ablutions the
Te Ora Hou office area can be locked and the facility handed over to community.
We hope to be in our new space by December 2021!
After careful planning, many meetings with Versatile, and a lot of hard work we have finalised the plan for the build.
We have been supported by three funders for funding to build, but we have a shortfall of $74,000.
We are all so excited to have a Whare that will allow us to run our programs to a high standard. Any koha towards our new Whare would be a huge help towards us completing our new space.
Current activities at Te Ora Hou include:
Te Pihi Ora Hou Tama (10-12 years)
Intermediate age boys group that meets weekly
Te Pihi Ora Hou Kotiro (10-12 years)
Intermediate aged girls group that meets weekly
Senior Club (13yrs and older)
A weekly club for high school aged rangatahi
Whakapakari
Whakapakari consists of a group of senior rangatahi from our community who have been identified as having leadership potential and in whom Te Ora Hou has invested considerable time and resources to develop their leadership skills.
Driver Licensing: Drive Safe, Drive Legal
NZTA contract Te Ora Hou to provide Learner License, Restricted License and Full License training.
Whanau Support Service

Final design 13 October 2020
After months of planning and consulting, we have a final design!
Next Steps before Christmas 2020
1. Versatile will send the plans off to be further developed (‘full working drawings’) and ready for the builders and council.
2. The full working drawings will then be submitted to council for consent
3. In the meantime Versatile will book in their workers to clear rubble, excavate and backfill.
We hope to be all moved in by Christmas 2021!
