Intensive Care is the life support centre of major hospitals.
None of us know when a parent, spouse, child or friend will unexpectedly need intensive care.
Every year more than 15,000 people, are admitted to the 26 public hospital Intensive Care Units ICU) across New Zealand. Anyone can need intensive care, irrespective of age or state of health. If you have a road accident, burns, trauma, serious illness, severe heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, or major surgery you may need to be cared for in an ICU.
Today, more than 90% of patients survive life-threatening accidents or illnesses with the help of intensive care, thanks to extensive staff education and continuing medical research that has significantly improved both treatment and technology.
We do this by funding grants for early career researchers and educators. We raise community awareness about critical care and provide valuable resources for ICU patients and their families to help them understand and navigate their ICU experience.
Over the last 30 years the Intensive Care Foundation has supported more than 140 research projects, providing more than $5m in research grant funding. We are committed to fostering the talent of novice researchers and educators in ICUs around New Zealand.
Your donation to the Foundation will be greatly appreciated and will directly support research by helping us fund more potentially life-saving projects.
At the Intensive Care Foundation we are dedicated to improving the care of critically ill patients, through funding vital research and education. We aim to improve the number of lives saved and the quality of living for survivors of critical illness.
