Im a volunteer at TKS Whanganui and Im the figure behind the updates and pics on this Givealittle page.
Sherron Sunnex is the Mother behind the whole Koha Shed movement. She steers the ship and you can come meet her and the rest of us at 88 Duncan Street Whanganui East. Come along to volunteer or just come for a look around the shed. We are open to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 am till 3 pm.Come along and see if there is anything you need that will help your life. We have LOTS of Toys all the time so you can leave the kids in the toy corner and go 'shopping' and the kids can sort some treasures to take home whilst you have a good look around. The other days of the week are sorting days. You can drop off items any week day, just pop on in and on weekends by arrangement although, having said that, plenty of people randomly drop off on the weekends and we are greeted by small mountains of donated goods, Lots of which is good stuff and some of which, at times contain a LOT of rubbish and broken things or old tv's because they don't want to pay the drop off charge at the recycling centers and items that don't work and clothing that should have been dumped or donated to the rag buyer bins that we then have to sort and pay to dump. This is why we like weekend drop offs to be by arrangement. We do turn away stuff that is no good for sharing on.
I have a trailer and can do deliveries for $10 (or more if you want to pay more) within the city boundary and also pick ups, again, we dont just take everything you want to give away so please be thoughtful of the things you want to gift on and recycle the stuff you wouldn't give to your best friends or family members. We think everyone deserves to have nice things that make them feel good.
We have a small army of wonderful volunteers who come to the shed and help with the many and varied jobs that are a part of the work we do sorting the donated items, stocking the shelves and cleaning and we have a fantastic garden staffed by our 2 fab permanent gardeners but if you like gardening come along and offer your help. We grow the veges to give away. This is an ongoing process we repeat weekly. We have a Kai table and you can take some fresh vege or some of whatever we have on there to help you through when times get hard. You can bring along your excess produce to add to the table.
The Koha Shed is the epitome of the Pay it forward movement and is a real treasure in the Community
