The Auckland Night Shelter plans to open a “Hub” in central Auckland to provide an after-hours location to better connect the homeless and those who risk becoming homeless to the services they need.
The Aotearoa/New Zealand Homelessness Action plan identifies gaps in our response to homelessness. Priority actions include providing additional support to individual, families and whānau who are homeless or at risk.
Covid-19 has seen increased emergency housing for those in need but it has created new challenges including getting access to other support services.
Lifewise research highlights that greater “situation-based support” and better navigation are priorities.
In 2021 Lifewsie found that after almost one year of Covid-19 in New Zealand, collaborating with other community groups to offer more inner-city spaces for people to connect was a priority.
A single point of accurate information and guidance remains an ongoing gap for homeless whānau and this doesn’t exist after 6pm.
