WRCT Volunteers have been busy preparing and planting new sites around the catchment since June 2023. As we near the end of the planting season later this month the WRCT Community Nursery is looking quite empty and it is now things get very busy propagating new plants for our next planting season in 2024. We currently have a separate Givealittle Page raising funds to support work in the Nursery so if you would like to find out more go to https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/sponsor-a-native-plant. WRCT have a broad range of projects running at different times and again if you would like to know more follow the link to our website GREENING THE WHAU https://www.whauriver.org.nz/projects.

Welcome to The Whau River Catchment Trust (WRCT)!

As the Chairperson for WRCT, I am delighted to extend a warm invitation to local boards, businesses, and members of the public to become a part of the 'Greening the Whau' initiative.

We are asking for support towards the "Greening The Whau" campaign. By partnering with us, together we can make a significant impact. Jump on this important effort towards cultivating sustainability and a green attitude throughout the Whau River catchment.

In return for your support, we offer opportunities for recognition, brand visibility, and partnership benefits that showcase your commitment towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Together, we can create a greener and more vibrant Whau River catchment, that benefits us all.

    Nāku noa, nā,

  • Progress to-date April 2018

Some great news progressively over the last three years we have been able to increase the number of plants planted on our restoration sites from 20,000 to last season (2017) to 27,000. How much is that we have spent on plants alone? On the average plants cost around $4.50 per plant from the wholesale nursery so 27,000 plants cost in the vicinity of $121,500. However fortunately some of our plants are provided by Council while others we have to purchase through money we raise through other sources. Site preparation is another huge cost and tens to be the limiting factor as it is costly as we need to use Council approved Contractors when herbicides are being used - which is fair enough.

Follow up maintenance of planted areas often needs to be done by approved Council Contractors but we often have willing volunteers who help to release weeds from around new plants or help spread mulch we get free fro various companies. Otherwise mulch for plants can cost from $25-$40/cum delivered to site. So any help financially is always a bonus and we are thankful for any help we receive.

  • MARCH ALREADY

It seems only yesterday we were on holiday but officially summer has passed and we are in the first month of Autumn. At this time of the year we are busy preparing sites for planting which commences in May and extends through to September.

So WRCT needs your support to raise funds towards the cost of paying for Council Approved weed Contractors to prepare our planting sites.

    Why do we need Contractors?

Council will only allow approved contractors to work on public land areas and weed control has a limited Council budget. So WRCT does its bit to get the job done so there are areas for Volunteers to plant out in the coming Winter months.

So if you can help by making a small donation it all helps towards restoring habitat in the Whau River Catchment for our incredible native wildlife.

Thanking you for your help and involvement.

  • YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED & VERY MUCH APPRECIATED

      13 January 2017

In 2016 WRCT/FOW planted out some 20,000 native plants creating new habitats for native animal species.

It is now possible through our NEW Givealittle Page, for you personally to make a financial contribution (for as little as $1), which helps to support the ongoing good work already underway helping to protect the Whau River, and for the continued restoration of native wildlife habitats within the Whau River Catchment.

The goal for 2017 is to restore much larger areas for new native wildlife habitat in the Whau River Catchment by planting out in excess of 50,000 eco-sourced native plants particularly along places such as the 'Te Whau Pathway'.

This comes at a cost so if you can help us meet some of the costs for clearing weeds and buying eco-sourced native plants please make a small donation as every bit does count.

We thank you for all the work undertaken by our FOW Volunteers in 2016 and look forward to catching up for what will be an epic year in 2017.
