Help us raise $2m+ for a new rescue boat
Wellington
Our mission to raise $2m+
Coastguard Wellington’s long-serving rescue boat, Spirit of Wellington, is coming to the end of her service life. We need a new boat to take her place, capable of responding in the gnarly Cook Strait and harbour conditions. It will take 18-24 months to get a new boat designed, built and on the water at a cost of at least $2 million. You can help!
SPIRIT OF WELLINGTON is a12.6m purpose-built rescue boat that entered service in 1997 and was designed to handle Cook Strait conditions. Now 27 years old, Spirit is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain and operate.
This fundraising campaign will replace Spirit of Wellington.
Coastguard Wellington is one of 63 units that make up Coastguard Tautiaki Moana. We are a charity that is 100% powered by volunteers. Our dedicated people give their time and energy to help save live on the water.
Last year in Wellington, we brought 119 people home safe from sea – including boaties, sailors, jetskiers, paddlers and windsurfers. Our crews answered over 40 distress calls and gave over 350hrs to out of hours rescues. Our volunteers gave over 5000 hrs to duty days, radio coverage, training, community events, fundraising and maintenance.
Our volunteers spend thousands of hours each year training on and off the water to ensure they are rescue ready. They learn deckhand, navigation, helming and VHF radio skills, search and rescue techniques, night manoeuvres, health and safety, and first aid.
Just like the people we help, our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds with different experience. All of us have joined Coastguard to give back to their community and help others.
