Youth Wright Charitable Trust

Wayne and Jessica Wright, of Tauranga New Zealand, have two teenage children, Alexandra and Adam, and have been involved with early childhood education services since 2001. Offering quality educational services to children has enabled the Wright's to play a role in the formative years of child development, but also highlighted the diverse and complex cultural and social choices that youth face as they grow into adulthood. Broken families, domestic violence, drugs, peer pressure, poverty, bullying and neglect are among the troubling trends affecting today's youth. Wayne and Jessica have a passionate devotion to targeting these youth issues through practical programs designed to inform and assist youth to become confident, well-adjusted members of the community.

Our Projects

P-Not Once

YWCT has worked with partners to develop a series of short educational videos for social media and a 30 minute classroom documentary designed to demonstrate the risks and consequences of using Methamphetamine. Our goal is to create a generational shift by giving 13 to 25 year olds the tools and knowledge to say NO when they are eventually offered P. The generational shift is a well proven concept for changing attitudes, as seen in the successful campaign examples of wearing seat belts and not smoking. By targeting the message onto the younger generation over a period of time, the attitude towards these issues has completely changed.

Free Child Car Restraints for Eligible Families

When properly used, child car seats and safety restraints are a proven device for minimising child injury during a car accident. Children without approved car seats are put at tremendous risk every time they travel. Despite the wide social acceptance and legal requirement for child car restraints, these items can be costly and difficult to afford for many families. The YWCT has pledged to give away, free, up to 100 new car seats per month to eligible families. We do not expect the seats to be returned, but do hope they will be passed on to other families in the community when children have outgrown their use. The YWCT is working with such as The Ministry of Social Development, NZ Police and Plunket to identify eligible families for this program.
