YWCA Christchurch

Help us keep our emergency homeless shelter for women and children operating.

Canterbury

The YWCA Christchurch was founded over 130 years ago by Kate Sheppard and her cohort. We are an emergency shelter for homeless women and children. We are a drug and alcohol free shelter with a focus on empowering women while they heal from trauma's like domestic violence and other situations that have bought about homelessness.

Women are referred from Work and Income (MSD), the police, other women's refuges in Canterbury as well as self referral. We are needing assistance with funding so that we can continue operating all of our wrap around services that assist in empowerment, healing and behavioral change.

We receive many wonderful donations from the general public in the way of clothing and linen for our residents as well as many other effective and helpful gifts from organisations that we appreciate and work with. We are forever grateful for all of their help.

Maintaining our emergency housing shelter  5 June 2020

Our clients accomodation is dated and while it is warm and dry it is in dire need of renovations. Our kitchens and bathrooms in our units have had very little updating if any over the last 70 years and we are really needing new kitchen bench tops and sinks as 99% of the current ones have damages from leaking on and off over the last 27 years in particular. Our bathrooms are mostly original and our tapware, vanitys, showers and toilets are all needing replacing as the ongoing maintenace is unaffordable. Please help us to raise the funds to update our clients accomodation so that their environment reflects clearly our care and the importance of dignity.
