Kaikoura District Council is the smallest local authority in mainland New Zealand. Our population is around 3,600 people, and we welcome an estimated 1 million visitors each year to enjoy our spectacular mountain to ocean scenery. We are internationally recognised for our whale watching, swimming with dolphins and seals, and many other nature-based activities. The district has experienced considerable damage in the 14 November 7.8 magnitude earthquakes.
