Weighted Blankets work by providing deep pressure touch, which in turn helps to calm, ground and ease anxiety.
My 3 year old step-son has Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder. I could not afford to pay $200 - $500 NZD for a Weighted Blanket. So I made him one using second hand fabric and plastic pellets.
The only real cost to me were the pellets which retail for around $30 for 2 kilograms. (The blankets need to weigh 2 - 5 kgs depending on the weight of the child). The need for plastic pellets is to enable the blankets to be washable.
My son loves his! It keeps him calm and allows him to de-stress. He calls it his "heavy blanket".
It made me realise that I could help other families with young children who would also benefit from a Weighted Blanket of their own, but like me, could not afford to pay retail price.
The reason for setting up this Givealittle page is to seek donations for the plastic pellets. I have already had a very generous donation of a sewing machine and am sourcing the fabric myself.
I have Chronic Kidney Failure and would like to spend some of my spare time making these blankets for other families with children on the Autism Spectrum, who have Sensory Processing Disorder or other conditions causing stress and anxiety.
Please help me to help other families in need!
Thank you so much for your donation.
