Knit for Domboreshato Primary School Project.

My name is Faustinah Ndlovu, I am 41yrs old. I am an Afrikiwi, born and raised in Zimbabwe, I moved to New Zealand in 2002 but now reside in Christchurch. I am a trained Social Worker, currently working as Youth worker in Mental Health Sector.

This is my story - My New Year’s resolution for 2015 was to make a positive difference to those who are less fortunate than me. I had to think outside of the square and came up a with the idea of attempting to knit the biggest ever doll with a view to endeavor to raise funds for Domboreshato Primary School in Rusape, Manicaland Zimbabwe where I attended my Primary school education.

I started my knitting project on 1 February 2015 and knitted an average of 3hrs a day while juggling up to 60hrs of work a week as a Youth Worker. During the Easter holiday I did a 36 hour knit-a-thon challenge where I knitted for 36 hours at my flat in Addington, Christchurch and at the Haswell quarry. The money raised bought 1000 exercise books for the students of Domboreshato Primary school.

This doll was knitted all as one piece and was stuffed with 136 pillows and is 3.75m in height. I submitted an application with World Genius Record hoping this Doll is the only one of its kind. I am hoping to hear back from World Genius record in 9 weeks’ time.

The money donated to this project will be used to buy water pump to pump water from the nearest river to the village and school vegetable garden, generate power from renewable energy – biogas energy/ solar energy. Any excess funds will be used purchase student desks, stationery, uniforms and sports equipment for the students of the school.

“I would like to take this doll around New Zealand and share about my Knit for Domboreshato School project and raise as much funds as I can for the school. These children have very little resources and a lot of potential, we in New Zealand, are so blessed.”
