Rotorua MTB Club needs help to fund the re-build of Exit Trails, Whaka forest. Trail 1 will be grade 3, and trail 2 will be grade 4-5.

Bay of Plenty

Recently, Whaka forest and the Rotorua MTB Club lost the Exit trails due to planned felling. The popular and well known trails started from the top of Nursery Rd, and finished on Long Mile Road, one of the main entry exit points for the Forest. Forestry, Iwi, and the RDC have given the Club permission to re-instate the trails, however we need to find enough funds to do that.

The Exit trails are an important part of the trail network, as they keep exiting bikes off Nursery Rd, free for uphill traffic, and allow riders trail option, instead of road option, to finish their ride, if they are exiting via Long Mile end. The rebuild will see a grade 4-5 trail, as well as a family friendly trail also. Please help us raise money, so we can have 2 incredible trails built, which will last another 30 years.

1) Easy exit trail – shown in pink on the exit block image.

Starts at the intersection of Tokorangi and Nursery Rds. Easy machine built uphill for about 100m. Shallow gradient machine built downhill. Open, flowy, easy for beginners but fun for experienced riders. Joins the existing exit trail. The existing exit trail needs to be cleared, smoothed and realigned in a couple of sections.

2) Harder Exit trail

Starts on where the old Rat NDO trail was on Tokorangi Pa Rd. Climbs through Redwoods and into the cleared area until it is at the highest useable point in the block. Starts with a slow to medium speed downhill with interesting natural features. As the trail proceeds the terrain becomes less steep so the trail is aligned to keep speed up and make use of natural roll of the land. Merges then crosses the easy trail and joins up with the old Exit trail. Old Exit trail needs veg clearing but minimal trail work. machine cleared attempting to leave the terrain/surface as un touched as possible then the trail details finished by hand.

Rotorua Mountain Bike Club's involvement (page creator)

The mountain bike park in the Whaka forest, Rotorua, NZ is very special. It has been rated as one of the best mountain bike parks in the world, by riders, racers, and world wide media. One of the best things about it, is that it is completely FREE to users, and can be ridden year round. It contains over 160km of single track, purpose built for mountain biking! The Rotorua Mountain Bike Club oversee the planning, building, and maintenance, of the trail system, liaising with the forestry companies involved, the landowners and the Rotorua District Council - all stakeholders in the forest.

As a commercial forest, areas of the forest are felled of their trees, and when this happens the trails beneath those trees are lost. Recently the popular Exit trails were lost to felling. The Rotorua MTB club will oversee the re-build of 2 new 'Exit trails', using contractors for the build.
