The Podcast

Up and Coming is a podcast where musicians have the opportunity to voice their musical journey and share their music with listeners, through interviews with me, Liam McDonald-Lurch. The podcasts consist of an interview, followed by a live performance usually an acoustic version of one of their pieces of music. Musicians tell stories of how they became passionate about music, how they write their material and share their opinions and advice on how to record and release music in today’s music industry.

Up and Coming podcast helps musicians to showcase their latest releases while also acting as a platform for local music to be found.

The Story So Far

We have had the pleasure of working with an incredible line up of talented artists so far for the podcast.

The first show featured a rap artist, Damon Garde, who discussed how he had always wanted to pursue music, which he did after finishing his film studies. He gave an insight to the recording of an EP and the difficulties and challenges he came across when working on the record. Damon also performed his latest single on the show.

A chill wave artist called Lilo Peaks also appeared on the podcast. She talked about the experience of playing music at venues in her native Foxton and in Auckland and about putting her own gigs together. She also spoke about how she had to gain confidence performing in the Auckland music scene after moving to the city from a small town.

The podcasts so far have been a success and we hope to have many more artists like these two come on in the future.

What Next?

We have had the privilege of being able to record the first few of the podcasts at MAINZ Institute. The more recent Up and Coming podcasts have been recorded at our Audio Engineer’s home with basic recording equipment, and in a living room rather than a professional studio. The goal is to be able to record the show entirely independently, with our own equipment to help enhance the quality of the podcast and its popularity.

Where You Come In!

Through the money raised with the Spark My Potential campaign we are planning to:

· Purchase high quality, professional gear which will allow us to be completely independent and provide the freedom to record anywhere, anytime.

· Manufacture merchandise to promote and support the podcast such as: t-shirts, bumper stickers, and compilation CD’s of music recorded on the show.

· An Up and Coming Podcast live music event is a goal for the future. We will hold gig’s featuring the musicians we've had on the podcast. We have been exposed to some incredible Kiwi music through the podcasts so far and we would love to have the opportunity to showcase the talent through live performances to the public.

Our goal is to aid musicians not only in giving them a place to talk about their art but also giving them good exposure.

We are hoping to raise $6000 this time around.

About Me:

I am an Auckland based film student and I started this podcast six months ago. Before then I studied and produced several short films.

I have an innate fascination with music and the brave souls who make it. On top of that I have a lot of co-workers and friends who are deeply involved in music themselves.

Up and Coming Podcast is:

Richard Wood: Sound Wizard. He makes the podcast sound amazing at the time of recording and handles the editing afterwards.

Louise Chandler: The Producer. Louise is responsible for getting guests onto the show. She handles everything guest related and helps to produce the content of the show. She also manages the Up and Coming Podcast Twitter and Instagram.

Mike McMinn: Record Assist and Editor: Mike shares the editing with Richard and is responsible for making the Podcast sounding amazing.

Fi Macdonald: Our resident photographer and videographer.
