A Cycling World Championships Dream
Wellington
I’m honoured to have been selected to represent NZ at the Cycling World Championships, Glasgow, August 3-13 August.
This is the culmination of years of incredibly hard work and massive amounts of support from sponsors, mates, other riders, and my family. Thank you all so much.
The lead in to World Champs started 12 months ago. Racing for NZ in Canada last year was my first taste of genuine international competition and I loved it! Since then, I finished my NCEA L3, worked (including almost full time this year), saved hard, and trained 20 - 25 hours a week.
Like many sports, the honour of representing NZ in cycling is more or less self-funded.
Our little country still hasn’t quite figured out how to fund elite athletes beyond a few well funded sports. Racing internationally is expensive and I’m reminded every day how much backing the European riders receive, as do our USA, Canadian and British competition. We take trains to our races, live simply and make incredible memories. What we don’t have in financial support, we make up for in true grit and determination, plus a lot of humour.
The support I have had has been phenomenal.
Now I’m needing to get myself to Scotland later this month, to prepare for world champs from 3 to 13 August. The funding I’m seeking covers my travel, accommodation, nutrition, my NZ kit, bike mechanical support, spare parts, and everything in between.
I am the beneficiary

Glasgow Result 12 August 2023
Hi there
Thank you again for your support. I have loved this experience and it’s taught me a huge amount.
I raced yesterday against the best in the world. I ended up 38th. I was hoping for a slightly better result but I absolutely gave it everything I had on the day. There is a lot to be grateful for.
The world stage in cycling, like most elite sport, is incredibly hard. At the end of the day, to be 38th in the world is something I’m proud of. I know I have more in me and my goal now is to build on this experience.
I’m heading home in a few days. It’ll be time to take a short rest before getting back into a busy summer of racing and making plans for next year, which I’m hoping will include a longer stint in Europe. This is definitely where NZ riders need to base ourselves to get the intensity of training and competition we need to be competitive at this level. The small margins we gain from racing against these top end guys, consistently, add up over the distances we race.
I have felt blessed to have the support I’ve had. It’s been tough, it’s been fun, and it’s been a massively positive experience and one that I’ll never forget.
Thank you again.
Elliot
