A Memorial for Stephen Thorpe
A memorial seat fit for a NZ environmental hero.
Blockhouse Bay, Auckland
Stephen Thorpe was a knowledgeable entomologist who was attacked and killed in a senseless crime outside the office where he spent countless hours sharing his knowledge voluntarily for the advancement and conservation of NZ's biodiversity. We wish to install a seat in the Blockhouse Bay Recreational Reserve, Auckland, where he spent much valuable time, a seat where people can sit and enjoy Nature. Stephen would appreciate that.
About us
The Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust is a registered charity committed to protecting butterflies, moths and their habitats across New Zealand.
Use of funds
The funds raised will be put towards the purchase and installation of a park seat in Stephen's honour - hopefully decorated with some of the bugs which he championed.

Location of the memorial seat 6 September 2024
We have been talking with Council about the memorial seat and as plans develop, here's a video showing the proposed location in the Blockhouse Bay Recreational Reserve.
In the meantime, we would love to see photographs of examples of seats and park furniture you may have seen that have been installed along special themes.
