Help Sean learn to run again by sponsoring Hamish to run his first Marathon.

Wellington

Sean is a 15 yr old boy who has lost his leg due to bone cancer. He needs your help to defy the odds in his battle with two rare disorders.

Hamish is a 48 year old father of one of Sean's mates, who has a goal of running a Marathon before he is 50.

Sean's brave battle against Bone cancer:

Sean is an amazing 15 year old Kiwi battler, who lives with his mum and two sisters. In 2014 he had a rotation-plasty a complex procedure where his knee and most of his femur were removed and his ankle and tibia were rotated and reattached with his foot facing backwards (the "Back Foot"). As well as bone cancer Sean has Fanconii Anemia,a condition which exacerbates the toxicity of chemotherapy and limits Sean's survival odds. Over the past 5 years Sean has undergone countless procedures, hours of rehabilitation and three major surgeries. Defiantly Sean has survived 9 months of gruelling high-dose chemotherapy. Last year the leg was amputated,in a van ness procedure. His foot now faces backwards and acts as his new knee. Whilst dealing with this life threatening disease is awful ,the horrendous social circumstances have been worse. Due to a change in family dynamics Sean has only his mum and two sisters to support him through his ordeal. As a single parent family, with mum constantly by Sean's side ,and no other support ,the financial impact on this family has been devastating, not to mention the emotional toll. They have lost almost everything including their family home.

Still believing that he can defy the odds they want to do everything possible , to get Sean back to a healthy fully functioning life. This involves many medical, nutritional and travel costs. Sean has a dream/bucket list he hopes to achieve, including being able to run again. With your help we can defy the odds and make those dreams come true.

Hamish's goal of running a Marathon:

While training for the past six months Hamish has had to overcome a number of setbacks. When he stands on the starting line on 20th December to run the Chiang Mai Marathon he will be facing his biggest sporting battle, even so, he believes the challenge to complete the 42km course pales into insignificance compared to the battles and challenges that Sean has overcome in the last 5 years.

The reasons Hamish is raising funds are:

1.To Cover Treatment and travel costs so that Sean can get well and fully functioning and keep defying the odds .

2. To have sufficient funds to purchase special prosthesis or equipment to enable Sean to do the things he loves , running, cycling, skiing and tramping again .

3. To help restore some quality life. Help Sean achieve his dreams.

4. Sean's family have suffered severe financial hardship since his diagnosis . They NEED your help to give Sean the best chance of beating his prognosis

I have used Sean's inspiring story as motivation to get to the starting line of my first Marathon and I am asking you to use my challenge to motivate you to give to help Sean to achieve his goal of being able to run again.

FUNDRAISING DAY #5 - COUNTDOWN TO RACE DAY = 2 DAYS  18 December 2015

Firstly, a big shout out to all those who have already generously made donations to the fundraiser I am doing to help Sean on his journey to be able to run again, you are all awesome!

So, to recap I am running my first Marathon on Sunday and as part of my motivation I am raising much needed funds for Elliot's mate Sean who is learning to run again after bone cancer resulted in a radical surgery where his foot has now been rotated 180 degrees and re-attached to become his new knee joint.

Last night my training journey ended with my last training run completed. Since the beginning of July that's 49 runs covering 602kms and me now 10kgs lighter than when I began.

For most of us the emotional drain on Sean and his family, of continual hospital visits and treatments, is unimaginable but the financial toll (many of these expenses have to be covered by his family and supporters) is even worse.

This is why I am asking you to make a donation if you are able. My aim is to get 200 people to give $10 by consciously giving up a couple of Christmas beers, wines, lattes, soft drinks, mince pies, chocolate bars, christmas decorations or crackers etc and putting this towards Sean's needs.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
