Blue Diamond Society, Nepal's LGBTI appeal

$1,800 donated

Please help Blue Diamond Society provide emergency support to LGBTI people in Nepal.

Auckland

Blue Diamond Society (BDS) is family to thousands of sexual and gender minorities in Nepal. They have been providing emergency support since the 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

BDS's care and support hospice needs food for HIV positive members of their community. Emergency support services are not always available or safe for gender and sexual minorities. In particular, services segregated for 'men' and for 'women' can exclude metis who identify as a third gender. This can mean not being able to get rations or use toilets.

BDS are fundraising to meet immediate needs: tents, clothes, blankets, umbrellas, water, food and medicine plus fuel. In the longer term they want to meet other basic needs by providing housing and employment programmes for LGBTQI people in Nepal. They will also need to repair their damaged office and care and support building.

Here are the details of Blue Diamond Society's bank account in Nepal if you want to deposit money there directly: http://www.bds.org.np/news/appeal-from-blue-diamond-society-nepal/

This online appeal is a simpler way for you to donate from New Zealand without having to transfer the money overseas.

I have worked on human rights projects in Nepal with Manisha Dhakal, the acting Executive Director of Blue Diamond Society. You can email her if you have any questions about this appeal (manishadhakal.nepal@gmail.com) or the BDS Board (bdsboard@gmail.com).

I have promoted Blue Diamond Society's appeal on Facebook. It asks people to donate directly to BDS's bank account in Kathmandu. Unfortunately people are less likely to donate to an overseas bank account. So BDS is also encouraging allies to fundraise in their own country. This online appeal will make it easier for people from New Zealand to donate to Blue Diamond Society in Nepal. Give a Little transfers the money raised into my account weekly. I will then deposit it as a lump sum into the Blue Diamond Society's account.

2nd payment made - and 4 days' left for this appeal  25 June 2015

We have almost raised $2,000 for LGBTI people affected by the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Give a Little has deposited the rest of the money raised in May - $600 - and I have just sent it through to Manisha at Blue Diamond Society in Kathmandu.

There are only 4 days' left before this appeal ends. So far there has been another $350 donated in June. That means we have raised $1850 in total. I will ask Gay NZ if they can promote the appeal one more time - so hopefully we might manage to raise a total of $2,000.

THANK YOU everyone for your generosity. Jack

We have often thought about how a disaster would affect us. We hoped others like us would help, so this is us paying it forward. We hope this helps TBILG people in need.
