Conservation work is pretty tough, particularly in the Eastern hill country of Taranaki, New Zealand, but is an Ironman tougher?

Inglewood, Taranaki

Conservation work is pretty tough, particularly in the Eastern hill country of Taranaki, New Zealand, but is an Ironman tougher? Our General Manager Kat has gotten pretty fit from climbing the hills and carrying traps and bait throughout the rugged terrain that an Ironman race has caught her attention. After two 70.3 races, she's eyeing up the 3.8km swim, 180k bike, and 42.2km run in Taupo in March 2025. All this training goes on top of her fieldwork for the Trust too!

Kat's doing this as a fundraiser for the East Taranaki Environment Collective to not only fundraise for the Trust to continue protecting over 18,000ha of eastern hill country, but to also show the physical and mental strength needed by the unsung heroes working to protect some of our most vulnerable species.

About us

ETEC is a community initiative, involving a suite of pest control and advocacy measures to restore East Taranaki. We have over 18,000 hectares of pest control to provide an area for kiwi, kōkako, pekapeka and other native species to thrive.

Use of funds

Continuing 18,000ha of pest control in East Taranaki, New Zealand, to protect our threatened species.

Got it done!  17 April 2025

What a brutal day that was, but absolutely amazing too! I don't think you really comprehend the distance until you do it. The swim was great, the bike was a brutal mental and physical challenge, and I was pretty gassed by the run. All that hill training meant that I could go all day on tired and sore legs though, and I power-walked/ran the marathon. That feeling of crossing the finish line though, and reflecting the journey that I've been on was something else.

Thanks so much for donating to the Trust, all of the money raised goes straight into what is definitely also hard work - keeping our hills and forest pest free!
