Purangi Kiwi Project

We are a community driven not for profit organisation located in Purangi, Taranaki. Our project area is recognised as a stronghold for kiwi in the North Island of New Zealand with an aim to have 1000 pair of kiwi in our project area by 2020. Visitors are able to enjoy the project area which is rich in biodiversity and home to many of our native species by walking our two tracks: The Otunahe Scenic reserve and the Hidden Valley. These tracks pass through farmland, exotic forestry and mature regenerating native forest. The prolific native species that can be seen or heard include fernbird, bellbird, tui, kereru, New Zealand Robin, New Zealand falcon, whitehead. Kiwi are thriving in the area but as they are nocturnal you won’t see or hear them during the daytime walks – but you may see footprints, droppings and probe holes in the soil. Annually the project team holds an Autumn kiwi listening event and an after dark Hidden valley walk where the valley is transformed into a magical glowworm grotto.
