Taranaki
We are a community driven not for profit organisation located in Purangi, Taranaki. Our project area is recognised as a stronghold for kiwi in the North Island of New Zealand with an aim to have 1000 pair of kiwi in our project area by 2020. Visitors are able to enjoy the project area which is rich in biodiversity and home to many of our native species by walking our two tracks: The Otunahe Scenic reserve and the Hidden Valley. These tracks pass through farmland, exotic forestry and mature regenerating native forest. The prolific native species that can be seen or heard include fernbird, bellbird, tui, kereru, New Zealand Robin, New Zealand falcon, whitehead. Kiwi are thriving in the area but as they are nocturnal you won’t see or hear them during the daytime walks – but you may see footprints, droppings and probe holes in the soil. Annually the project team holds an Autumn kiwi listening event and an after dark Hidden valley walk where the valley is transformed into a magical glowworm grotto. East Taranaki Environment Trust – Purangi Kiwi Project was set up in 2005. New Zealand’s kiwi population is in decline. We are a community driven project who are working together to create an environment for kiwi to thrive. Our goal is to grow our kiwi population to 1000 pair by 2020.
ETEC is a community initiative, involving a suite of pest control and advocacy measures to restore East Taranaki. We have over 18,000 hectares of pest control to provide an area for kiwi, kōkako, pekapeka and other native species to thrive.
The funds raised will allow us to gravel the 500 metre driveway and supply new fencing. With an improved driveway we can then accommodate all vehicles, allowing easier access to our walkways for all users to benefit and enjoy.
