To celebrate ComunaCiencia’s first birthday, we are jumping on the givealittle bandwagon and asking you donate/share our page to help us celebrate Comunaciencia’s first birthday, as well as the birthdays of founders Karla and Nicole.

What we do

We create opportunities for young Peruvians to improve their science literacy by guiding them in developing research projects in their schools and communities. We want to create a platform to inspire the next generations of environmental, health and community leaders all over Peru!

Main Story

ComunaCiencia is a non-for-profit project based on the volunteer work of a team of professionals and scientists who share the passion for education, nature’s conservation, and scientific research. We use online and offline communication tools to bring our expertise to Peruvian pupils in the current Covid-19 environment, developing opportunities for them to create and exchange scientific knowledge between themselves and national and international scientists. We guide pupils through the fundamentals of the scientific method while rediscovering their surroundings and developing nature conservation and citizenship values.

This project is based in Peru and began when Covid-19 badly hit Peru, causing school education to transform into a virtual based interaction. As this will continue for the rest of 2020, Peruvian founders Karla Ramirez and Nicole Abanto realised there was a way for them to bring science to school students in remote and not so remote areas of Peru.

They have recently completed a pilot with around 60 all female students from a school in the Ica region, which was delivered via Zoom for 6 weeks where they guided the girls to explore their own surroundings while maintaining safety measures in place due to Covid-19. The students’ aim was to understand examples of biodiversity they could find in their own backyards; they collected their own “data”, analysed their findings and then shared their results with theirs and scientific experts from the community. It was an incredible experience!

Use of funds

Money raised via this givealittle page will go towards funding our project as we try it off the ground. This will enable us to continue to bring science to young people of Peru who would otherwise miss out.

ComunaCiencia es un proyecto voluntario sin fines de lucro conformado por un equipo en expansión de profesionales de diversas disciplinas y expertos/as en ciencias quienes comparten una gran pasión por la conservación ambiental, la educación y la investigación científica. Juntan sus experiencias para desarrollar oportunidades de creación e intercambio de conocimientos científicos entre escolares de secundaria del Perú y expertos/as en ciencias del ámbito nacional e internacional. Esto lo hacen guiando a los y las escolares por los pasos fundamentales del método científico mientras redescubren su entorno, desarrollan valores ambientales y para una mejor ciudadanía.

Este proyecto inició cuando la Covid-19 comenzó a golpear duramente al Peru y la educación se transformó rápidamente en educación virtual que continuará a lo largo del año 2020. Las fundadoras peruanas Karla Ramirez y Nicole Abanto, se dieron cuenta de que ahora había una nueva forma de llevar la ciencia a los y las estudiantes del Peru en áreas remotas y no tan remotas del país. Recientemente ellas ha realizado un piloto del proyecto con alrededor de 60 estudiantes mujeres de un colegio en la región Ica. Este piloto fue realizado a través de la plataforma Zoom por 6 semanas durante las cuales guiaron a las estudiantes en la exploración de sus propios ambientes mientras mantenían las recomendaciones de seguridad debido a la alta transmisión de Covid-19 en aquella región. Las estudiantes, apoyadas por sus docentes y guiadas por el equipo de ComunaCiencia, buscaron entender ejemplos de la biodiversidad de su propia región. Este proyecto se adaptó a la currícula de su colegio gracias a sus estupendas maestras. Las estudiantes recolectaron sus propios datos, analizaron sus resultados y luego compartieron sus hallazgos entre ellas y los y las científicas de su comunidad. Fue una gran experiencia!

Debido al éxito del piloto inicial, el equipo de ComunaCiencia se encuentra muy motivado y listo para continuar expandiendo este tipo de proyectos educativos hacia las áreas más alejadas dentro del Peru. Necesitan de tu ayuda para ser capaces de apoyar a la siguiente generación de jóvenes líderes en ciencias y protagonistas de una buena ciudadanía para el país y el Mundo!
