A place to learn and share the power of community kai production
Canterbury
WHAT WE DO
Our farm produces kai for whānau around Waitaha. It is grown by a range of people who have come to learn the practice of growing organic food and fibres. We provide Level 3 and 4 Certificates in Organic Primary Production, internships, and employment.
The kai we produce is distributed to community through a wide network including Whānau Ora Navigators, social workers, kura, and Rūnanga Wairewa, Koukourārata, and Taumutu.
In the last year (2023/4) we distributed hundreds of kgs of free fruits and vegetables and built 20 new māra kai for whānau!
This year (2024/5) we aim to
- Grow 800 vegie boxes to be gifted over 4 seasonal harvests
- Deliver a training programme and resource whānau to install māra kai in others homes
- Run a summer harvest programme
- Start our Hua Parakore verification
BHU Commitment
The BHU is committed elevating the kaupapa of Māori seed, soil and kai sovereignty through education and practices that aim to decolonise our food system. We do this for the benefit of our society and planet. Our courses aim to blend knowledge from latest research in organics with mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori covering Hua Parakore, maramataka, Māori growing systems and techniques.
We are an organics training center that grows free vegetables for whānau around Waitaha. Our vision is to promote the practice of kai sovereignty by empowering whānau to grow their own.
All funds donated will go towards paying our staff and gifting kai to the community.
