Wind is free... and it's there day and night, rain or shine (at least where we are). Help develop our Blueskin turbine as a community asset!
Otago
Newly available technology will let us have the same power and revenue for community needs from just one turbine. This means we can replace our original idea of 3 turbines with one that is just 22% taller and is quieter.
After 9 years of community good your Community Trust needs the reliable income from the turbine to continue our work – we want to continue building resilience for the next 90 years.
It’s been 8 years of work and consultation to get to this point and with your help we can cover the costs in this last phase before construction begins.
Please help us maintain a science and evidence based approach. We want to develop community owned renewable generation, ensure a positive future for Blueskin and light the way for others!
We want to create local climate solutions together. We're investing our work in this project because we believe we have the solutions to the climate crisis at our fingertips and we just need to act. We believe we need to re-localize for energy, food and economy to ensure we become more resilient and to invest in our future.
Creating local climate solutions together.
We were founded in 2008 with the vision to facilitate a positive, healthy, secure and resilient future for Blueskin Bay and linked communities and promote sustainable resource use.
Our mission is to act to strengthen our communities in the immediate, mid and long-term future, with emphasis on energy, food, water and community resilience.
Our objectives are:
1. To develop and administer projects that provide education, support and resources to maximise locally based sustainable provision of energy, food, and water.
2. To develop and administer projects that provide education, support and resources to minimise energy use, encourage healthy homes and encourage sustainable households.
3. To secure and manage funding to achieve the stated goals of the Trust, and to stimulate local sustainable economic activity.
4. To develop and maintain relationships to achieve the stated goals of the Trust.
5. To ensure community partnership in any enterprises initiated by the Trust and to aim for the most equitable use of resources.
6. To foster linkages between organisations with objectives similar to, or complementary to, the Trust’s own Vision and Objectives.
7. The Trust’s goals and activity will always remain charitable.
Wind Tower Vandalism - an attack on science 9 May 2017
On the 31st of March 2017 our data logger stopped sending data from our wind testing mast. This wasn't picked up until May 1st by our data analysts. On the 3rd of May we conducted a site visit and discovered that the cups of the anemometers (wind measuring instrumentation) had been shot at before the guy ropes holding the mast up were cut. The mast and instrumentation have been effectively destroyed. This is not only a loss of a valuable data collection point, it is also an attack on science. The Environment Court requested we provide local background Acoustic monitoring. We have installed Acoustic monitoring units around neighbouring properties, but the only way our expert can judge impact is to measure noise against wind speed and direction. We now face a fundraising task to reinstall equipment. This does not impact in any serious way on the Environment Court process but it is an attempt to destroy community wind and deny others the benefit of our work. It is sad and frustrating to have our careful and considered collection of information requested by the Court disabled by an extremist or two.
Thank you so much Andrew! We are excited to be getting so close. We want not only to be generating electricity locally: we want to continue building resilience for the next 80 years as well!
Thank you for your wonderful support of our work, in all ways. We know the path to a low carbon energy system is fraught with challenges, but it is thanks to people who share our values and are willing to offer support at critical times that we're able to achieve what we do!
Our thanks for your generosity! We look forward to creating more distributed, flexible distribution and energy supply systems as well as general infrastructure. Local wind is only a start but a very good start! Next, peer to peer transactions of local energy and who knows what else?
Pat, thank you for your ongoing support and lovely words. It makes a real difference to have your support and we have full confidence with all the mitigation we've done to really reduce any adverse effect that we'll get consent and be able to build our Blueskin turbine.
