Borehole repairs and greening of Nigeria
International
Since May 2020 we have been raising funds to support the good work of Lovatt Foundation in Nigeria. Lovatt Foundation.Org was established in May 2015 by a New Zealand poet and teacher Fiona Lovatt, who has lived and worked with women and orphans in Nigeria since 2011. She helped set up an orphanage in a war torn area of Borno -supporting and working with children who had been displaced. She has worked with volunteers and other NGOs to continue to repair boreholes and plant 1000s of trees. She has with the help of her Foundation supported small business loans, medical treatment, distribution of zakaat and education scholarships
The beauty of this grassroots organization is the speed at which you see your funds put to work. Every penny goes a long way as the collective does not get paid, nobody draws a wage for the work.
To find out more about Fiona and the amazing work she does with the foundation please visit her website and FB page.

I am a Librarian and my first little project with Fiona was to find book donations for her "Books without Borders"project in 2008. Since then I have followed her work in Nigeria and once again I am getting the opportunity to assist.
The funds will be used to repair many boreholes that have stopped working in poor areas of Northern Nigeria and for continued support in planting fruit and other trees.
Ramadan Giving 14 March 2024
Alhumdulillah this is the latest update from Sr Fiona on the first eve of Ramadan in Nigeria on a farm where she is teaching children of farmers. If you would like to feed a fasting families, it's only $1 per person with basic food.
Ramadan Kareem .
Zoom in and look at those tiny, tiny wrists, those tiny forearms where a child of 9 may never have reached 18kg. When we gather for shared meals we get to see the condition of the people.
Over here, each day, for all their life, it seems to me that the masses are just eating enough to last another day.
There is very little in a child's diet to grow a skeleton to last well through pregnancy and child birth... It is at iftar when I see why the life expectancy is below 54 years.
And it is during these shared meals when I see the promise of Islam: where there is food for four Muslims, there is food for 8.
Out in the farm we are hosting iftar and we have a resident Hafiz of the Quran for the month. Families are walking 2km in the late afternoon to join us and 2km home again under the starlight after Taraweeh prayer.
They have never had such a Ramadan as this and they are feeling so close and kind and satisfied with the simple food we can serve. And there is baraka in all of it. Food prepared for 40 spreads to cover 56, and we take turns with the trays.
Alhamdulilah for the dry weather that means all of this can be outdoors.
