Soon after adopting Boyd he was diagnosed as visually impaired. His vision is getting worse and he needs expensive specialist treatment.

I wasn't actively looking for another cat having just lost one to kidney failure, yet it's been a year now since I adopted Boyd. He's a big, playful, goofy cuddler and adores my other cat, Skye. With adopting a cat it's a given there may be hurdles however I was not anticipating the type of hurdles that Boyd and I were faced with.
Two days after bringing him home it was apparent that he couldn't see very well. I took him back to the clinic at the SPCA for a second opinion and tests confirmed he is partially blind and he was most likely born with this visual defect or has had it since a very young age. He has virtually no peripheral vision, night blindness and doesn't seem to see things unless they are right in front of him. I was told that I didn't have to go through with the adoption but that was not an option for me. He was a happy and in other ways, a healthy cat. An older cat with a diagnosed vision impairment doesn't have great adoption prospects and the thought of him being put to sleep was heartbreaking. He is now an indoor only cat and loving life.
As of late Boyd's vision is getting worse so one of my aims is to get him to the animal eye specialist vet to see if anything can be done. I know that the initial consult is around the $200 mark, excluding any tests or treatment which will be a lot more. If that wasn't enough on it's own for him to deal with, he has other health problems that have required expensive treatment.
He has chronic constipation and requires daily medication. Last year (2016) he required surgery to relieve an impaction.
Early 2017 he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in situ after a biopsy. Boyd had a 2nd surgery in two weeks to freeze off the lesions on his nose. With these types of lesions it is likely they will return in the same or a nearby location and he will likely need further cryosurgery at a later date to prevent invasive cancer. His nose healed fine but unfortunately he developed cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) about 10 days after the surgery. The cystitis was most likely triggered by the stress of the surgeries and there is no cure for it. With management, it can resolve or be reduced in severity but can flare up again at any point.
Boyd's vet bills since adoption are in the thousands. At age 9 at adoption, he was too old to take out pet insurance on.
I would be so grateful for any donation in order to help Boyd recover, and to one day get his eyes seen to. He means the world to me!
Thank you for your time
I want to provide Boyd with the best care that he can get.
Progress and Set Backs 16 February 2017
Sorry for the lack of updates. A lot has happened since.
Boyds biopsy results came back as squamous cell carcinoma in situ. He had surgery to remove the lesions (cryotherapy). The surgery cost $575.
His wounds are healing nicely but he has had some complications. Due to the stress of having 2 surgeries in 2 weeks he developed what looks like either a urinary tract infection or cystitis (or both). The lab results will provide more details than the in house test, and we hope to get those in a couple of days. He has been given antibiotics and pain relief for the mean time.
The vet bill for this last health issue was $198.50.
In the last two months the vet bill has totalled over $1800.
It's been very, very hard. Not just on my finances but also on the cats, especially Boyd, and it has me in a constant state of worry. Without my mum taking us to the appointments and the clinic allowing me flexible payment options, all of this wouldn't have been possible.
Where does that leave his eye treatment? On hold for the time being. I need to get Boyd's stress levels down to help clear up his uti/cystitis, and to be honest I can in no way afford it at this time.
Please let your friends, family, colleagues etc know about Boyd's journey. Any donations are so helpful.
Thank you so much Angela x
Oh my gosh Jill! My jaw has dropped. You are incredible. This will definitely help with Boyd's treatment. Thank you so much! (Boyd sends smooches)
Thank you so so much :) Yes I would do just about anything for either of my kitties.
