Help a family build cherished memories with their 5-year-old son with the limited time he has left.
Waikato
Let me introduce you to my awesome nephew, Kayden. He is one of three children. Being the only son, he holds a special place in his Mummy and Daddy's heart (and, of course, his aunty's). He loves video games, lego, reading books, playing on the iPad (and movie nights at Aunty Caccia's). He has a quick mind and keeps us on our toes and has an amazing knack of reciting lines from his favourite movies and TV programmes (just like his Mummy). His sense of humour is well beyond his years. He has a very kind and gentle nature.
Kayden hit a major milestone this year as he turned 5 in January and has started at "big kid's school" with his sister, Bella, who is his BEST friend. What a joy it has been to watch him grow.....a privilege we thought to be ours for many years to come.
Unfortunately our dreams of watching Kayden grow up to be a young man were quickly shattered when he was taken to the hospital with what we thought were issues related to his sight. You could only imagine the heart-wrenching pain his parents experienced when they were told by doctors that their precious 5-year-old son had been diagnosed with a rare brain tumour known as DIPG – (diffused intrinsic pontine glioma).
This form of cancer mostly strikes children between 5-7 years old. Because the tumor is located in the brain stem, it is inoperable, non responsive to chemotherapy and is terminal. Doctors have advised that following radiation therapy children may have around 6-9 months of symptom free time before the tumour will eventually grow back and nothing more can be done. Our hopes of beating this nasty tumour completely vanished at the news.
Although his parents were obviously devastated by this prognosis and have found it extremely difficult coming to terms with this news, they have chosen to make the most of the limited time they have left with their 5 year old boy. They want him to experience as much of life as he can, and fill his time with happiness and joy with his family. They want him to experience all the childhood dreams one would want for their own child.
THIS is where we need your help.
We want to give Kayden and his family something to look forward to with excitement and joy amidst a time that has been filled with pain and sorrow. Help them to create precious memories that can be looked upon fondly for the rest of their lives. Help give our courageous boy the holiday of his dreams, of all childrens' dreams - a trip to Disneyland and Legoland in Los Angeles with his family.
The total costs for this trip is approximately $25,000 but we would be grateful for ANY contribution that could be made to help this family. Even if the goal is not reached– every bit helps! Kayden has been such a brave boy ~ let's reward him for his courage!
THANK YOU xoxo
I'm a proud aunty wanting to help make a childhood dream come true for my terminally ill nephew, Kayden, and his family.
In a Mother's Eyes 8 May 2016
My sister and her family were interviewed yesterday by Stuff.co.nz . This was a huge decision for her and her husband to make as they are quite private, are not accustom to being in the limelight and do not often ask for help from others. Even after the interview was done, my sister was still wondering whether or not the decision to be interviewed was the right one for her son.....but I know that it was and many others agreed (see video and article here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/well-good/79732617/family-rally-to-get-terminally-ill-boy-dream-trip-to-disneyland.html)
The outpouring of love, kindness and hope was received minutes after my sisters heartfelt interview was made available to the public. Even I was brought to tears watching as she recalled the moments she received the awful news of her son's condition. But, what I think many felt was her unconditional love for her son and her focus on staying positive for him and her entire family.
She requested that I share hers and her families love and gratitude with you all. It was so overwhelming for us to receive so many kind, supportive messages for my sisters family. We feel absolutely blessed to be in the company of so many wonderful people of the world! We thank you all sincerely for your help - big or small. It is guaranteed now that Kayden's dream will be fulfilled. 'Thank you' will never adequately express how grateful we are for all the help.
Arohanui from us all xo
