A page to give back to the Burt Family, to ease the financial burden of Tee's forthcoming lung transplant
Auckland
Many of us have been helped by the Burt family in the past, both in big and small ways... way's that may not seem like much to them, but mean so much to us.
Some of us have had Santa Andrew bring the magic of Christmas to our children, while others have had the joy of being invited into their house with open arms, not as a guest but as a member of the family. Many of us have chewed Tee's ear off when we have a problem, and she always has a tidbit of advice to soothe our way. And then some of us have been lucky enough to encounter Burty in his role as an Ambulance officer for St John.. and what's better than a friendly face when you're sick and stressed?
As many of you will be aware, Teresa has recently been placed on the Active Waiting list for a lung transplant, after a battle with a bout of pneumonia and then a subsequent coma (to cut a long complicated story very very short).
Being placed onto the active wait list is both a relief and a stress for the Burts. There will be a sense of relief when the operation has been deemed a success, as the chances of Tee being around for a lot longer to see her wee family grow - especially the youngest light of her life Miss Poppy/Sonja grow and go to school.
However, what many of you won't be aware of is the financial implications on Tee and Andrew. The operation itself will require Tee to be off work for around 6 months (depending on how fast she recovers, determination of hers aside!), but along with Tee being off work Burty will also have to take around 2 months off to help Teresa, with doctors visits, general help around the house and all other recovery related things.
Whether you want to donate $1, $10, $100 or any amount, every dollar will be greatly valued, and I know will go a long way to easing some of this financial stress on the Burt's by providing a nice little savings "buffer" for when money is stretched thin during recovery.
<3 to you all! xx
Teresa has been a second Mum to me since I was a teen, always there with a kind word, a good hug and a steady ear... this is my little way of saying that you for everything you've done for me, especially after our family tragedy when you organised Santa Andrew to visit and bring the joy of Xmas back to my kids
6 weeks post op! 7 May 2015
So another update on Teresa’s progress, those following Tee on Facebook will be aware that she has had a home leave and is going home soon!!! She is making amazing progress.
Of course with coming home and continuing her rehab there are a lot of changes to be made to their lifestyle and their home. As you may be aware not only has Teresa been off work, but Andrew hasn’t been working either (he has been living with Tee at Hearty Towers) and although you can plan for these things, you cant plan for everything. Add to that the need for ongoing rehab, which means a treadmill at home, the cost of driving back and forward to Greenlane hospital 3 times a week and Auckland once a week for tests, procedures and checkups with the trainers at the gym, parking at the hospitals ($300 in 2 weeks!!) which adds up and then the interesting one….the immune suppression drugs are making her put on weight. To date she has put on 6kg and has had to buy new trackpants so far. Also with a scar from left armpit to right armpit, she cannot wear a normal bra so has to go out and buy special sports type bras that wont compromise the scarring.
So the reality is, any help you can give is going to be very appreciated and with her immune system being compromised, is probably a bit more practical than a casserole or pot of soup, as things are and will continue to be a battle for a while as Teresa concentrates on healing and Andrew helps her along the way….
