New Zealand's longest-surviving church, this recognised national treasure relies on donations to continue its community and spiritual life.

Russell, Northland

New Zealand's oldest living and breathing Anglican church, Christ Church Russell / Kororāreka, is a place of national historic significance. Its graveyard includes memorials and graves of some of the nation's founders and leaders (rangatira).

Built in 1836, it was the site of the proclamation of the first Lieutenant Governor, Capt. William Hobson. In 1845 it was damaged by musket fire in the Battle of Kororareka and marks can still be seen in its timbers. It may be the oldest building in the country that is still being used for its original purpose.

The small but committed congregation no longer have the resources to fund and maintain the buildings and services and are grateful for your donation.

For its ongoing community role, the church and its precinct rely on donations and public support to stay alive and sound, and to be open for visitors on most days of the year. This Easter (2023) the church was literally packed to the rafters, yet in our cashless society many visitors had no way of materially showing their support. This page allows and encourages all who appreciate Christ Church to make a donation and express their support.
