Fund an Advert in the Dominion Post: an Open letter to the Minister for Climate Change issues

Canterbury

We need to get our politicians taking this issue much more seriously. Climate change is the defining issue of our time. I've been told that a stand-out advert in e.g. the Dominion will cost me up to $2200 and I'd like some help with funding that.

Sample of Open Letter:

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MINISTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUES

Hon. Paula Bennett

Minister for Climate Change Issues

Parliament Buildings

Wellington 6160

July 2016

Dear Minister

I write to you as a citizen with a science/chemistry background who is deeply concerned about the current lack of effective action on climate change.

ECONOMIC EFFECTS

Both locally and globally, climate change is predicted to deliver a massive hit to the economy. Warnings have been issued by the World Bank, the IMF and the Bank of England, along with the global reinsurance industry and others. The World Bank estimate is for a cost to the global economy of US$158 trillion by 2050 unless we act now; and while that can only be a guesstimate at this stage, it would be criminally negligent to ignore it.

REFUGEES AND GLOBAL SECURITY

A number of authorities including the Pentagon consider that climate change will have a serious effect on global security, and result in a major increase in economic migrants and refugees.

INADEQUATE NEW ZEALAND RESPONSE SO FAR

Therefore I am deeply concerned and disappointed about the current Government’s lack of effective action, indeed the lack of any sense of urgency, regarding climate change. I have read your existing proposals; they are extremely disappointing and threaten the wellbeing of our children. The recent (29 June 2016) comments from the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment highlight this inaction, and no honest, sensible person would dismiss those comments as irrelevant or alarmist.

------ Complete version to be in Dominion when the funds are raised.

a positive outcome?  22 August 2016

Hi Everyone

Thanks again for your contribution. I've had a number of letters from people expressing support and thanks for the open letter. I have not yet had a response from the Minister but I have an assurance from her Private Secretary (Climate Change) that a reply will be forthcoming. More positively, I see that she has recently requested cross-party talks on climate action - so perhaps we have made a difference!
