Young Connors Cancer Journey

Christchurch, Canterbury

In August 2021, 4 year old Connor was diagnosed with Philidelphia positive Acute lymphoblastic Lymphoma, a very rare cancer. diagnosis found it was in his spinal fluid, his bone marrow and masses throughout his body and blood.

With initial treatment of two years Connor endured an immense amount of treatment with high doses of chemotherapy, Cranial Radiation and numerous surgeries.

In February 2023 Connor started school and was able to have some form of kids normal, Connor made new friends and was doing well, enjoying doing things that normal kids do. In mid May a checkup identified some chilling signs, Connor had developed cancerous cells in his prostate. Our worse nightmare. the cancer returning. Further testing found that the cancer had also reinfected bone marrow and spinal fluid.'

Doctors recommended a severe Reinduction plan, including 36 day High Dose Chemotherapy, full body radiation treatment and a bone marrow transplant. Due to his young age these treatments are very saddening as a grandparent to watch, the changes in Connors normally happy lively demeaner changed to a sick withdrawn little boy who acts strong but is obviously in a lot of pain. We are at the start of a long journey of treatment to recovery. requiring a bone marrow transplant, long stays in Starship Hospital Auckland, weekly returns for checkups followed by 6-8months recovery.

Connors blood tests have come back showing that he is now 100% percent donor and his philidelphia chromosome Is negative!! In the scheme of things this is amazing. The next year is crucial as risks reduce after that first year. Technically connor is now in remission still with weekly visits to chch hospital and monthly to auckland we have found ourselves with a sense of some relief.
