COVID-19 Kolkata Children Update: Hope

Covid 19 lockdown anywhere brings great difficulties. This is especially so in Kolkata. In this crowded, bustling city many people live in impoverished areas. They live in crowded, tiny shanty houses, often one roomed, with several people young and old to a house. The people live in a subsistent manner depending on work one day to buy food for the next. Their poor diet and environment makes them susceptible to disease of any kind including Covid-19.

A lockdown in these conditions does little to prevent the spread of the disease. What lockdown does do however is to prohibit people from carrying on with their little businesses or their menial employment jobs. Their day by day income stops and they have no money for food for themselves or their children. Life becomes desperate; a matter of survival.

Lun Misao Open Home Foundation Director in Kolkata raised the plight for survival of the children and families in their programmes with Open Home Foundation International in New Zealand.
