Cycling to help the Cancer Society with patient and family support and the joint Rotary –UNICEF “Give every Child a Future” project.
Hawke's Bay
FINISHED! Cape Reinga to Bluff in 34 riding days . Check out the Gallery above as all photos are uploaded now.
I am seeking to raise funds from all with a generous heart along the way for: • The Hawke's Bay Cancer Society for patient and family support services and • The Rotary- UNICEF "Give Every Child A Future" project which will celebrate 100 years of Rotary service in Australasia and the South Pacific. Through this partnership with UNICEF, it is proposed to vaccinate the most disadvantaged children and adolescent girls across the South Pacific.
All donations received will be deposited into the Greenmeadows Rotary Club’s bank account and be presented to these charities by our Rotary President Frank Hauser and all donors will be able to track my progress through the Maprogress website - a URL link will be provided when the page goes “live” at noon on Friday 5 February 2021. It will chart my daily progress at 5-minute intervals.
I also wish to raise awareness of the Rotary Centenary in New Zealand and the South Pacific. As a member of the Greenmeadows Rotary Club, I enjoy the fellowship of the generous and hardworking members who contribute in so many ways to our Napier Community.
Should I encounter any incident or impediment and am unable to complete the full ride, I intend to donate to Rotary the funds ( accommodation/food etc.) that I would have expended on any residual portion of the ride.
The Maprogress page will subsequently also show the progress of those 400 plus competitors entered in the 2021 Te Aotearoa Brevet who will be departing the Cape between 21 to 27 February. They will be aiming to complete the route in 30 days or under with many riding huge daily mileages. I am aiming to ride a more conservative 80 to 100 km a day.
I am riding the Te Aotearoa Cycle Trail for Rotary to support and advance the two projects. Donors will be able to track my progress during my ride through the Maprogress website.
The Cancer Society will use the funds received for patient and family support services and UNICEF will use funds received for the Joint Rotary – UNICEF children's immunization roll out in the Souht Pacific.
All costs will be met wholly by me.
Post ride activity 8 May 2021
Since completing the ride, I have undertaken a few media interviews, including Rotary Downunder.
The Greenmeadows Rotary Club has generously committed to top up the final donation total for each charity to realise a net $20,000 each.
Prior to this the Greenmeadows members have collectively donated $632 in one evening to the cause.
I've extended the deadline for 2 more weeks to remain open for any further donations arising from the publicity.
As this is likely to be my final update, I would like to thank you all for your support and generosity to my chosen charities.
The funds will be distributed by the Greenmeadows Rotary Club President, Frank Heuser to each charity, on closure of this page.
Thanks again, Alan
