While corona virus continues to keep tourists away, for longer than we thought, some people are in need of extra support.
Manawatu / Whanganui
As the corona virus continues to delay the commencement of tourism activities around the world, especially that of international travelers, and as the situation lasts longer than expected, it is time to get extra help to those that need it.
In the high tourism areas of Bunaken; Lembeh and Manado in North Sulawesi; Indonesia, some people are struggling to put food on the table, relying on small infrequent handouts from the government, growing vegetables in small plots and fishing where possible, while the home-stays, resorts and dive centers do all they can to provide work, income and support for their staff, as well as survive to provide employment again as soon as possible.
As a dive manager awaiting the re-opening of Bunaken National Park and the return of the dive tourism this area relies heavily upon, I am currently living on a resort in Bunaken with my girlfriend. With your help, we can buy more basic supplies such as rice, milk, diapers, milk formula, flour, sugar, coffee, eggs, fish and cooking oil, to give our friends and their families extra support while they wait for the local economy to recover.
Our target of NZ$3000 in 2 weeks will buy over 500 kilos of rice; enough eggs, tinned fish/protein, diapers, milk formula, gas and cooking oil for 60+ people for a about 1 month. If we exceed our target then we can help more people for longer and provide other important needs such as masks, clothes, and medicine.
A donation of $50 would buy 10kg of rice; 20 eggs, 10 tins of protein, 54 diapers AND 750g of milk formula.
Please give what you can, remember that no donation is too small and every penny is sure to go a long way.

Lembeh donations given and campaign has ended 21 August 2020
So, it was a while ago but Lembeh crew received their donations on August 10th and they were gratefully received. The campaign has now ended, and with some private donations not shown on the page, we managed to raise $4185 for our friends in Bunaken, Manado and Lembeh. We were able to buy for a few extra people in Manado too!
The next shopping trip will be coming in the next week or so, before the end of the month, and will buy about the same again for everyone.
Thank you so much to everyone for supporting this cause. It isn't over yet, here or anywhere else, but the kindness shown is heartwarming and goes a long way to keep those that need support while the economy slowly readjusts. Domestic tourism is on the up and people are looking forward to coming back to our beautiful island resorts which will get some people back to work.
