Provide community support for Ernest and Jacqui after he experienced a major stroke at 56 years. Ernest needs 24/7 care at home in Cromwell
Otago
Ernest (Ernie) had a major stroke on June 16th , 2020, at age 56 years. He's alive, but is now left with significant cognitive issues and left sided weakness.
Ernest is a qualified builder and emigrated with Jacqui and the family from South Africa 13 years ago to give their children a better future. He has always been a healthy and active man and yet now he's having to learn to walk and talk again with assistance.
He's due to come back home in a few weeks from rehabilitation, and he is going to need ongoing care and support, together with his wife Jacqui.
Jacqui works as a carer at Ripponburn Home and Hospital in Cromwell, and yet she now also faces caring for her husband Ernest 24/7. They have three grown children in New Zealand, with one of them local in Cromwell. Their extended family are back home in South Africa.
Can we as a community become like their family, and provide them with the support they will need after this devastating event?
One of Jacqui's and Ernest's Wessels many friends in the Cromwell Region. We all want to support them.
House alterations and renovations for mobility needs, house maintenance.
Transport costs for care needs, "getting out", activities for Ernest, and activities for Ernie and Jacqui as a couple.
Coming Home! 29 September 2020
Ernie is coming home on Friday this week, after 2 weeks at Dunstan.
Jackie is changing her work as part time paid carer to being full time with Ernie at home, and also working 2 nights a week.
An extra bathroom is being planned with a wet shower to assist their needs ongoing.
Were holding a Home and Garden Show on the 21st November to help pay for this. More to follow.
We all wish them a smooth homecoming, as they build a new life together.
Thanks Cathy. So much appreciated. We pray your own health is improving.
