Extraordinary School, Cold Leaky Pool!

Rawhiti School is one of the new merger schools in east Christchurch following an education restructure in the city since the earthquakes.

At our Leaver Terrace school site in North New Brighton we have a 1940’s built school pool, comprising a full 25 metre pool, plus a separate smaller learner’s pool. However, this old pool needs a number of repairs as it is leaking thousands of litres of water into the ground and is also completely un-heated. We have finalised a quote to completely re-line the pool and add a heat pump to raise the water temperature up by a number of degrees. These measures will allow the pool to be used a longer period in the summer months, will completely stop the leaking and will give the pool another lease of life for future generations of our children.

These measures carry a significant cost and combined with support from the Board of Trustees, Rawhiti PTA is fundraising to cover the shortfall of these pool improvements, approximately $20,000 in the next 12 months.

We believe it’s crucial our kids learn water safety skills and know how to swim to survive. The best place to do that is at our own school pool. This is especially vital as a Christchurch City Council pool facility is still years away from opening on our side of town.
