Eye Care for Africa is a New Zealand registered charity aimed at providing eye care to remote parts of East Africa.
Hastings, Hawke's Bay
Niall completed Te Araroa as a fund-raising drive for Eye Care for Africa. Te Araroa is a 3008km through-hike the length of New Zealand. The main purpose was to raise funds to build a small eye clinic in Shinyanga, a remote part of Northern Tanzania. Shinyanga is hours away from the nearest eye care facility. All monies raised go to the cause with all professionals paying their own way.
Eye Care for Africa was founded in 2017 by Hawkes Bay based Optometrist Niall McCormack. It was formed to provide real eye care to some of the most marginalised groups in the countries of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Kenya. It all began when Niall accepted an invitation to provide eye care to an orphanage in Uganda. Whilst there it became very apparent of the dire level of need that existed.
This experience motivated Niall to make a difference and upon his return to New Zealand ‘Eye Care for Africa’ was created. The charity is now an official charity registered with the NZ Charities Commission.
Our goal is to build a small eye clinic in Shinyanga, Northern Tanzania.
Thank you! 6 November 2024
Thank you to everyone who attended our quiz night on Friday November 1st in Havelock North. It was a complete sell-out and a huge success with over $12,000 raised! Framed pictures of our recent trip to Tanzania raised around $2,000. Remember, all professionals who donate their time to work in East Africa pay their own travel and expenses!
That is an incredibly generous donation. Thank you so much - may you continue to benefit from your recent surgery!
Thank you Steve - much appreciated!
Thank you, yet again, Paul. Very much appreciated!
