15 year old Jackson is fighting a rare and agressive bone cancer Ewing's Sarcoma for the 2nd time

Auckland

On the 29th September 2016 our gorgeous son Jackson was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma a rare and aggressive bone cancer located in his Sacrum/tailbone.

Jackson went through an intense gruelling 8 month treatment of chemotherapy and radiation.

On the 23rd May 2017 Jackson received the news that he was NED (no evidence of disease/in remission)

Unfortunately on the 20th October 2017, only 5 months later, we received the devastating news that Jackson's cancer had relapsed and returned in his pelvis/hip socket.

The statistics are not great.

1 out of 3 patients with relapsed Ewing's Sarcoma respond to treatment.

1 out of 10 patients will live 3 years.

The earlier the reoccurrence the poorer the prognosis.

Heartbreaking statistics but we live in hope and think positive that Jackson will be that 1 !

Jackson is amazingly strong and positive and determined to fight and defeat this beast!

Jackson will go into Starship for surgery next Tuesday to have a central line port inserted then start chemotherapy the very next day.

He will have around 2/3 cycles of 5 day chemotherapy and then they will reassess to see if the cancer has responded and either to move on with the same chemo or try a plan B or C chemo plan.

We will also be meeting with the surgical and radiation teams to see if they will be able to help.

Currently Jackson has been in a lot of pain and is on 2 different types of morphine.

He will need to be in a wheelchair so as not to cause any fractures to his hip/pelvis.

Jackson requires my 24/7 care so I will have to give up work.

Use of funds

Any contributions would be hugely appreciated to help with travel, parking, other costs incurred (such as Jackson's every changing appetite and cravings during chemo) and most importantly making the days out of hospital extra special and making awesome memories ❤️

Bad news  12 April 2018

Hi everyone

Unfortunately we received some devastating news yesterday - Jacksons cancer has spread 😞

Jackson had CT and MRI scans today. We were called up to see his Oncologist straight after his MRI which left us a bit anxious as usually wouldn’t hear results for a day or two.

Unfortunately the oncologist said the cancer has spread to around 20 spots.

Spots in his pelvis, spine and 1 in his lung.

With so many new spots and having had chemo and radiation already with this not working - this means that now they have no curative options as the cancer is showing to be chemo resistant and would only be palliative to help relieve symptoms and pain.

Surgery is not an option as the spots are all different places.

May talk with radiation to see if they can help

But this would be purely to relive pain no cure.

Of course we are just devastated and finding this hard to comprehend. Think we are still all in a bit of shock.

We will have the PET Scan on Friday and then meet again with the oncologist next Wednesday along with the palliative care team.

We will discuss the options further.

We have discussed moving back to Christchurch to be closer to family and friends so this is likely.

Over the last 18 months I have spent hours (2/3) each night researching Ewing’s Sarcoma - treatments not only in NZ but overseas.

I am aware of every single trial anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately Ewing’s is a beast!

The decisions we need to make next week in regards to further treatment again knowing these are not treatments that will cure the cancer are going to be hard

But they will be informed decisions that we have researched and discussed as a family and overall decisions that Jackson has the most say in.

We need to respect these decisions.

As our oncologist said everyday there are brave and intelligent people who decide to continue chemo and brave and intelligent people who decide to stop treatment and enjoy the time - both are right for them!

We will continue to keep you all up to date with how things are going.

Love to you all ❤️❤️
